In October, NZ Aged Care Association chief executive Simon Wallace said this year about 940 aged care beds closed or weren’t operational and warned that many more such closure may be on the way.
Reports from Business and Economic Research showed a need to build 15,000 aged care beds by 2030 and another 24,500 retirement units by 2033.
Earlier this year, Aged Care commissioner Carolyn Cooper said the loss of hundreds of rest home beds was causing a “bed block” in public hospitals – when patients couldn’t be discharged because they had nowhere to go.
And the recent announcement of the closure of a carehome in Auckland due to staffing shortages, has only highlighted the depth of this burgeoning crisis.
We could go on presenting different statistics showing the same result, but the fact of the matter is that there is indeed a workforce crisis within the aged-care sector.
We hear about it every day in our conversations with facility managers and it’s not just confined to New Zealand.
The World Health Organisation estimates a shortfall of 15 million health workers globally by 2030.
A new report from BNZ highlighted the desperate need for workers across the entire healthcare sector. Its survey found that 75 percent of healthcare providers were facing staffing shortages.
News reports suggested that the staffing shortage at hospitals and aged-care facilities was so acute, that nurses were working double and even triple shifts to plug gaps.
So, where are all the nurses?
Earlier this month, the government announced further details in the sector agreement on care workers’ residence pathway. This pathway provides care workers who are paid $28.25 an hour to be eligible to gain residence after 24 months.
